Does using Marijuana Affect Fertility?
Are you using marijuana? Is it only for medical benefits that comes with marijuana? Do you want to whether marijuana will affect your chances of getting pregnant or not? Well! you are not the only one dealing with such issues. It is important for you to get a clear idea of whether it is safe for you or not.
Effect on reproductive hormones
Sometimes It may get difficult for you to get pregnant. Few studies showed that if marijuana is used for a long time, it causes problems. There can be a little downfall in the production of the reproductive hormones for both males and females.
Because of the low production of male hormones named as testosterone, there will be low counts of sperms in males. Also, the low rate of dehydroepiandrosterone can also affect the production of eggs in females. Moreover, one of the active ingredients of marijuana, THC can make its way to the reproductive path of the women who use pot. Thus, reducing the mobility of sperm, and leading to low fertility chances.
Chances of infertility
Around 15% of married people have to face infertility in the US. The costs of infertility in the US are about $5 billion each year, and one of the known factors of the infertility is drug use. Marijuana is the leading drug used all over the world.
A professor at the University of Boston, Lauren Wise considers that now is the best time to investigate the effects of marijuana on fertility of women. This is because of its usage in high amount all over the world.
Improved chances of conception
A research was done on the couples in North America at PRESTO. It mainly targeted the women with the table relationships and used fertility treatments or contraception. The research team surveyed about 5000 women whose ages were between 20 to 40 in the US. These females were provided with an option of inviting the male partners, and around 1000 males participated.
The team of researchers found out that during the four years between 2013 to 2017, around 12% of the females and 14% of the males used marijuana every two months. After the follow up of 12 cycles, the conception chances were same in the couples who used pot and those who didn’t.
Questions were raised about the influence of using marijuana on the body and how its effects remained the same. For instance, the researchers said that putting people in classifications as per the amount of drug used is quite difficult. They said that in the future, it would be better to do the studies for the amount of marijuana used each day. In this way, it will be easy to know the exact intensity of the effects of marijuana on users.
Is it dangerous for babies?
Few studies recommend that those pregnant women who use marijuana regularly can put their babies at the high risk of the premature birth or low birth weight. Because of smoking weed, there are high levels of carbon monoxide in the blood. And, baby in the womb gets low oxygen which can affect its growth.
The kids whose mothers use marijuana while they are pregnant, get a different brain and have a disturbed sleep as they grow up. This may lead to the high chances of depression in them and other behavioral issues like attention deficits and impulsiveness. Also, the research pointed out the links between the law school grades and prenatal exposure of marijuana.
Also, it is hard to tell that the marijuana you use is pure or not. It can be contaminated which leads to a higher risk of diseases in babies once you get pregnant. If you are using marijuana, it is recommended to wait a few weeks or so before you try to get conceived. The reason is that it takes some time for the traces of drug to flush out of the body.
Using marijuana for medical purposes is also solvable. Just talk to your doctor and get an alternative medicine. You should know that marijuana may not be healthy for the development of the child and it can lead to complications. You have to be careful if you want to keep your baby safe.
