The right time to take your newborn out for the first time
The time when moms and newborns had to stay indoors for long periods of time are long gone. In this day and age, you can take your baby out even the day after they are born. There is no medical reason to prevent you from doing so.
The best weather
Most moms believe that they can only take their newborns out during the sunny summer season but this if far from the truth. Did you know that you can take your newborn out even during the winter? The only problem would be what activity you can do with a newborn in the snow. As long as you keep yourselves warm, safe and don’t stay out for too long, you can take your baby out during winter.
Here are clothing guidelines for each season when you can take your baby out
During winter
Winter is safe for your baby. Just make sure that he or she is bundled up properly. Don’t take her out when the temperature is too cold. If it’s cold for you, it will probably be freezing for her.
The risk of cold weather is that your baby can get hypothermia because of an underdeveloped nervous system and small subcutaneous fat.
Keep it very short.
During spring
Spring is a wonderful time to take your newborn out especially since the days are longer. A day in spring would be greatly enjoyed with sometime in the park. However, spring can be unpredictable. One minute it is bright and clear and the next there is a sudden rain shower. You need to be prepared for any changes in the weather. Have an umbrella, a change of clothes and extra blankets.
During summer
While summer is the ideal time to take your newborn out, you need to protect them from the sun and excessive heat. During summer, don’t go out when the sun is too hot especially in the mid-afternoon. As you go out, use a stroller with some shade.
During fall
Autumn is like spring. Moderate temperature, sunny days and colorful leaves. But since the weather can change abruptly, you need to be prepared for anything. Similar to spring, have some extra blankets and an umbrella with you. Don’t get caught off-guard.
The perfect timing
The perfect time to take your baby outside will depend on the weather. For example, during summer, the best time to take your baby out will be in the mid-morning or late afternoons when the sun is not too hot. The mid-afternoons can be pretty hot for both you and your baby.
During winter, take your baby out when there’s a bit of natural light. This could be in the mid-morning to mid-afternoon. Don’t go out in freezing temperatures.
During spring and autumn, the timing can be unpredictable. A chilly morning can quickly turn to a sunny mid-morning. You just need to be on the watch out for some clear skies and natural lighting.
Any weather is good for your newborn as long as you are cautious and act prudently. Take time to enjoy the fresh air.
