At What Age Should I Start Sleep Training my Baby and How to teach him?
Sleep Training
Sleep training is basically teaching your baby to fall asleep. In some cases mothers do not even have to help them, they start forming a sleeping pattern on their own and sleep through the night, however in other cases, it gets very tough to make your baby fall asleep once he has woken up. We have all been through the sleepless nights where the baby cries become an alarm for us. It is very much normal for babies to become super energetic usually at night time because they have been sleeping all day. So at some point, it becomes crucial for both mothers and the babies to form a sleeping schedule for which sleep training is important.
The Right Age
Motherhood does not come with a manual. You learn with experience and by being practical. However, I am here to help all the mothers out there as much as I can. Many experts, pediatrics and child specialists recommend that the perfect age to help your baby in sleep training is 4-6 months. This is the time when the baby has already started forming a pattern. This is the age, if you must observe, the baby at times even skip the night feeds. This is applicable for the majority of babies out there. However, not every baby is the same. So you need not to worry! Some babies learn and form sleeping schedules when they are 9-12 months old, which is completely normal too.
How to Sleep Train your Baby
The best way of starting the training is by making a proper bedtime routine. Make sure that you put your baby to bed at a specific time every night, now the baby might not be sleepy at that hour, so what you can do is you can sing a lullaby to help your baby fall asleep.
Forming a routine is the best way of helping your baby fall asleep. Before putting your baby to bed, give him or her a warm bath, change the baby into comfortable clothes and then put him to bed. By following this routine the baby will be used to of it in a month or two.
This will work if you wake your baby up every morning at the same time. You have to make sure that the baby does not fall asleep earlier than his or her bedtime, or he/she will not fall asleep later at night. By being specific with the times, your baby will then start forming the exact same pattern. Stay consistent with this routine, make sure the baby is well fed before bedtime and you will see the results in a month or two. All the late-night cries, being super energetic at night will all go away by following a proper routine.
Forming a routine takes time. Getting used to it takes time too, for both the mom and the baby. So have patience and trust the process.
Go easy on yourself, you are already doing a great job!
