As a mother of a newborn baby, you might feel that breastfeeding during night hours is exhausting and ruins your routines. Even if so, night time breastfeeding is very important. At night your body produces the hormone which induces milk production when you breastfeed your baby. The balance of breast milk is maintained at night when milk production takes place. Also, every mother has a different capacity to store milk in their breasts, so to keep up with your baby’s needs it is essential to breastfeed at night. Here are a few tips that can make your breastfeeding easier during the night time.

  1. Look for A Comfortable Position

In the start, you might find it hard to lie down while breastfeeding as you are not aware of how the baby will react. But as you get familiar with your baby’s reactions try to find a lying position for yourself and the sooner you do it the better it is for you. This is important because even if you would not be able to sleep but at least your body will be at rest so try to find a comfortable spot or position on your bed where you can lie down horizontally while breastfeeding your baby.

Lie on your side, with a pillow or two to support your head. A pillow between your knees may help you feel comfortable. Position the baby, lying on his side, so his nose is level with your nipple. With one hand, bring the baby in close to you so that his chin is touching your breast and his head is tipped back a bit.

  1. Keep The Lights Turned Off

At the night time when you pick up your baby for breastfeeding, you would want him/her to sleep immediately for which you need to keep the room quiet and dark. If you want to keep a check on what you are doing, you can turn on the night lamp or dull light in the room.

  1. Remove The Clock From Your Room

It is better if you stay oblivious to the time especially at night because when you keep checking at the clock after every time your baby wakes you up for the breastfeeding it becomes worse for you to realize it has not been a while since you slept.

  1. Easy Clothing

Wear the clothes that you can easily access like a nightgown which opens from the front or PJs. This is a great comfort and relief because on cold nights as they keep you warm compared to those clothes in which you would have to pull up or down leaving the rest of your body bare.

  1. Be Organized

Keep everything besides your bed before you go to bed with your baby like diapers, water bottles, towels, snacks, clean clothes, etc. This will help you up in avoiding extra effort at night to get up from your bed and do everything from scratch while you are sleepy yourself.

Good news for you is that as your baby will grow up his or her night time routines will definitely change and he/she will not need breastfeeding at night time as a necessity anymore. So you can eventually change the routine of your baby as they grow up and hopefully, they will adjust to it.
